  • Mecum to Auction 1964 Shelby Cobra at Kissimmee 2021 Auction

Presented by Mecum Auctions – Almost 60 years after its inception, the Shelby Cobra remains a touchstone of American automotive history, one that literally redefined performance. This 1964 Shelby Cobra 289, CSX2498, has recently emerged from an extensive nut-and-bolt restoration to like-original condition that was completed in 2020.

As chronicled in the Shelby Cobra Registry, the car was billed to Shelby American on July 3, 1964, shipped to Los Angeles aboard the “SS Loch Avon” and invoiced to Hellertown Motors in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, on March 29, 1965. Ordered in white with a black interior and the Class A accessory package including WSW tires, a landau hardtop, side curtains and a luggage rack (uninstalled), it was shipped to Pennsylvania via TWA air freight and delivered by Hellertown Motors to its first owner, Dennis Richmond of Allentown, on April 16, 1965. Richmond enjoyed driving his new Cobra, travelling some 38,000 miles before selling it to its second owner, Cass Ludyard of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania in 1967.

Two years later, by which time it was repainted in silver and fitted with a Boss 302 engine, the Cobra was purchased by Karl McKeever of Collegeville, in whose care it remained for the next 50 years. During that time, CSX2498 was refinished in Guardsman Blue and an NOS 289 HiPo engine was installed along with new upholstery and other new parts as needed. Its recent restoration included refinishing the car in its original white with the black-painted wire wheels and chromed spinner centers seen earlier in its history. A rack-and-pinion car with full-length undercar exhaust, it is authentically finished and beautifully detailed throughout, including such important details as the correct Shelby aluminum intake, hollow-letter Cobra valve covers and Tri-Y exhaust headers, and it is also well documented with an entry in the Shelby Registry and an album of restoration photos.

This vehicle will be auction at Mecum Auctions’ Kissimmee 2021 event (January 7-16, 2021).

I believe this auction highlighted RM Sotheby’s key strengths and capabilities as a global market leader for achieving successful results for private collections. The Elkhart Collection auction was also another case study for the power of ‘no reserve’ collection auctions, with many of the lots seeing incredible results. The success of The Elkhart Collection auction joins previous court-authorized bankruptcy auctions that RM Sotheby’s has successfully conducted such as the 2016 Duemila Route sale in Milan, Italy on behalf of the Italian Government and the 2017 Level 5 Motorsports liquidation in Auburn, Indiana on behalf of U.S. Federal authorities, and further highlighting our company’s ability to execute complex sales successfully on a global scale.”

  • 2019 Porsche Speedster Heading to Mecum Auctions Indianapolis

Sequence Build No. 1,373 out of a total limited production output of just 1,948 examples, this 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster is in “as-new” condition with just 113 original miles. Optioned with the Heritage Design Package, a $24,510 extra, it features two-tone leather interior appointment, black brake calipers with white “PORSCHE” script, gold “SPEEDSTER” badging, classic Porsche crests and silver-colored wheels. Although it shares the Speedster namesake with the four previous generations that exemplified the minimalist sports car ethos, the 2019 Speedster is a far more radical and testosterone-infused machine.

Beneath the classic Speedster wide body with a low, raked-back windshield, a double-bubble rear decklid and aggressively designed front and rear fascia is a competition-proven chassis, drivetrain, suspension and braking system sourced directly from the GT3 Touring model. The engine is a naturally aspirated 4.0L flat-6 producing 502 HP with some additional bits taken from the GT3 R including individual throttle bodies, a high-pressure injection system and a lightweight exhaust. The Speedster is offered exclusively with a 6-speed manual gearbox (PDK is not an option) sourced from the 911R. The suspension rides on a staggered set of center-lock wheels, 21-inch rear and 20-inch front, mounted on steamroller-sized low aspect ratio Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The GT3 Touring suspension used on the Speedster is a more compliant setup than that of its razor-edged GT3 RS brethren. Hence, the ride is firm but supple while delivering massive cornering grip.

It is generously equipped with automatic climate control, Bose surround sound, Sport Chrono Package, rearview camera, Porsche Torque Vectoring, Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Active Suspension Management, carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon fiber hood, carbon fiber composite bucket seats, front axle lift system, online navigation, Porsche embossed crest in the headrests and power locks, windows and mirrors. Click the button below to view the details and stay with us for complete coverage of all Mecum Auctions.

With only 113 miles on the odometer, this car will be part of Mecum’s Indy Auction, July 10th to 18th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds
