  • Car shopping for your kid? Parents magazine gives the nod to Subaru Impreza for teen drivers

Parents magazine has endorsed the Subaru Impreza for teen drivers. A red five-door hatchback model is shown here in a heavily-snowed winter scene.

While your teen driver’s winter commuting needs might not be quite this rough, standard all-wheel drive in all Subaru Impreza models could be reassuring in snow-prone climates.

I’m a car guy, for sure. But I also happen to be a dad. And I have two kids headed off to college this fall, with a commute of about 30 miles each way in a climate that gets its share of wintry weather. As I’ve been thinking ahead to what sort of car our family should look for to support this next step in their lives, the Subaru marque, with a nice offering of small, fuel-efficient cars that happen to be all-wheel-drive throughout the lineup, was the first to cross my mind. So the timing was fortuitous when a Google Alert showed up in my inbox about a Subaru press release announcing that Parents magazine endorsed the 2020 Subaru Impreza for teen drivers.

Granted, the Subaru press release isn’t new, so this particular Google Alert email was one of those “better late than never” cases.

The Google Alert system, which is supposed to notify users when websites add new content containing specified keywords, is understandably imperfect. And frequently, it mistakes old content that has moved to a new location on a website for new content.

While I originally missed it, Subaru’s April 2020 press release about the Parents magazine endorsement of the Subaru Impreza for teen drivers showed up as an alert in my inbox on December 29. But, given my current car-shopping situation, I’m glad it did.

When I mentioned to one of my kids that I thought a Subaru might be a good fit as the daily driver for the college commute, her eyes lit up—understandably because she has become a big fan of the Fast and Furious franchise. Nevertheless, rest assured that I won’t be going shopping for a modded Subaru WRX equipped with NOS and a fartcan exhaust.

I know better than to put something like that in the hands of new drivers. And I also won’t be buying the specific 2020 model that Parents magazine is endorsing.

But a nice, used stock Impreza?

Yeah, that might be just the thing for a daily commuter that is nimble, reasonably fun, reliable, and equipped to deal with the occasional drive home from campus on snowy roads.

Here are some of the strengths Parents magazine points to in their endorsement of the Subaru Impreza for teen drivers:

    • Five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
    • Standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, which, according to Subaru, provides “better stability, efficiency, and a quicker response to slippery conditions” by helping to “provide a seamless transfer of power to all four wheels”
    • Fuel economy up to 36 mpg during highway driving (which, by the way, will likely be the primary setting for my kids’ daily college commute)
    • Ample cargo space with sedan and 5-door body styles

According to the automaker, Parents magazine also noted that “97 percent of the Imprezas sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today,” which is a welcome statistic for a buyer like me who is likely to be shopping “the well-used market” for my soon-to-be college students.

Yeah, scholarships help. But they definitely don’t cover everything.

According to Investopedia.com, co-branding is “… a marketing strategy that utilizes multiple brand names on a good or service as part of a strategic alliance. Also known as a brand partnership, co-branding (or “cobranding”) encompasses several different types of branding collaborations, typically involving the brands of at least two companies.”

My favorite bit of co-branding is the tantalizing hookup of Jay’s potato chips with the Open Pit barbeque sauce. The result of that wonderful union is arguably the best BBQ chips you can find in the Chicago area. Good stuff.

Carmakers are not immune to the lure of co-branding, and have engaged in a number of branding partnerships over the years, some to good effect, some not so much. Here we have collected a number of print ads for vehicles which were co-branded. How many of these do you recall? For the record, we realize that the Ultra Brite Volkswagen shown below was just a giveaway car and not an actual production vehicle–we just thought the ad was cool. If you remember any co-branding efforts not pictured here, tell us about it. The place to leave comments is down below.

  • As the U.S. economy struggles back, Subaru of America sales soar in September

A blue 2020 Subaru BRZ drifts on a track. The BRZ posted the highest percentage increase in Subaru of America sales for September 2020.

The 2020 Subaru BRZ sold only 251 units in September, but that was a 126 percent increase over September 2019.

Volatility of the Dow continues, and millions of Americans remain out of work as a global pandemic drags on. Yet you wouldn’t know it if you had pulled a Rip Van Winkle, fallen asleep in, say, February 2020, and awakened Thursday with the Subaru of America sales report for September as the first thing you read.

Subaru of America sales for last month amounted to an “all-time record” September performance, with the automaker reporting 60,103 units sold. Their strongest-selling model was the Outback, followed in descending order of sales by the Crosstrek, Ascent, Impreza, Legacy, and WRX/STI.

Bottoming out the Subaru of America sales list for September 2020 was the Subaru BRZ, that sports-coupe twin of the Toyota 86 and the Scion FRS, all beloved by countless enthusiasts but, sadly, purchased in very limited numbers.

The BRZ sold a humble 251 units in September, but in terms of percentage growth the BRZ actually topped the lineup with an increase of 126 percent over September 2019 sales. Perhaps more consumers are viewing a fun sports coupe as one of the best antidotes for that feeling of being cooped-up for months due to a pandemic.

That, combined with the energy infused into the market this year by halo-car launches like the new Toyota Supra, the C8 Corvette, and the Nissan Z Proto, is an encouraging sign for those of us concerned about the future of the sports car segment during an era when, increasingly, everyone seems to feel mandated to buy a crossover, pickup truck, or SUV.

Compared to last September, Subaru of America sales for the month increased by 16 percent, according to the automaker. Outback sales grew by a whopping 51 percent over September 2019, and the month was the strongest September ever for both the Outback and the Forester.

The Subaru Crosstrek, which has acquired an enthusiastic following for its winning combination of off-road capabilities and sporty performance, posted a more modest increase of 0.5 percent. But at 11,950 units sold in September 2020, that performance was good enough to earn the Subaru Crosstrek third place in the lineup for the month.

“September was a standout month at Subaru, and thanks to our retailers, it was our best-ever September and best month of 2020,” said Thomas J. Doll, President and CEO, Subaru of America, Inc. “This has been a challenging year for us all, but the success we have seen this month gives me hope and excitement for a strong fourth quarter.”
